Tanuki

November 24th, 2009

“Tanuki” means “racoon” in japanese. It’s part of japanese culture since centuries, as symbol of prosperity. We often see them as sculpture and figurines with a big belly and holding a sake gourd.
In japanese folklore, tanuki are master in disguising and can change shape as they want.

If you want to learn more about tanuki and its place in japanese culture I suggest you to watch Pompoko, by Isao Takahata.

Buffalo

November 12th, 2009

I just started this new project, to draw the 12 chinese zodiac animals in sum-e. I start with the buffalo:

I already have the tiger, the horse and the cat, that means that I only have 8 left to draw.
Next one is the rat.

It’s been a while I didn’t post any sumi-e on the blog, so for the next comers, let me explain you what it is. In japanese “sumi” means “ink” and “e” means “drawing”. Both words put together means ink drawing.
