The « ch’nord »

November 14th, 2008

(Only if you’ve seen or at least heard of this French movie called « Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis », then you’ll understand the title .. anyway) Last week I’ve been to the northern France to give a visit to a T-shirt supplier and a the T-shirt printing company. Yes, I’m thinking about making T-shirts with my Japanese illustrations, since I noticed that many people are interested in them.

I’ve been first to Leers, not far from Lille, to an apparel supplier. They were very welcoming and rather generous with the samples of their good quality T-shirts.
Then direction Villeneuve d’Ascq to meet a printer specialized in textile.

The conclusion is that it was a positive day, we came home with more or less what we expected, and we’re ready to work with the people we met. A plus, we had the region speciality food : La Carbonade Flamande (beef with brown beer) served with a BIG bowl of french fries.

The project, continued

November 11th, 2008

One of the essentials things to launch a new brand, is (ofcourse) finding a brand name, and while we’re in it .. a logo that goes nicely with it. After a week of thinking, and findings (believe me .. it wasn’t at all that simple to find a name that hasn’t been taken by a concurrent, plus we can’t take something that partially resemble to the existing brands). Finally, the name will be “Zanies” comes from “ze” (the french pronunciation for “the”) and “animals”, we find it pleasant and easy to remember and to pronounce.

The project

October 31st, 2008

The little animals of Monique are nice, we noticed that many people like them, plus it is easy to create many kinds of products with their simple design. So, the next idea that came naturally to our minds is : why not making a product line based on these round animals, and sell them ?
And so here are the options we’re facing :

1. To find manufacturers in Asia for a mass production and sell through a distributor in France/Europe who will take care of the stock, distribution, and marketing, but .. they’re not cheap.
2. To find local manufacturers, and sell the products ourselves. Which gives us a better margin, but also more logistic work and less time for creating new products.
3. To sell a licence of our design to a company with their own production and distribution network. The easiest way to start, but (ofcourse) the package comes with its inconvinient points too ..

It is a problem to find a reliable manufacturer. Monique who’s an Indonesian, naturally went to Indonesia to find ones, but like she thought might happen, knowing well the country and the way people work there, she didn’t find anything match to our expectations.
We can do like everybody else, outsourcing in China, but we will need a lot of preparations since we have no contact person there. So maybe later ..
For the moment, we choose to work with “nearby” suppliers. Less fuss, more quality ..
